Skin Pigmentation Treatment

Melasma or Dark Spots (Hyperpigmentation)
Melasma, commonly referred to as dark spots or patches, is the medical term for areas of increased pigmentation that appear primarily on the skin of the face, as well as on the neck, hands, and other parts of the body.
Melasma occurs most frequently in women with darker skin tones and is a condition whose exact cause is not fully understood.
Predisposing factors that contribute to the development of melasma include pregnancy, during which levels of female hormones, such as progesterone and estradiol, increase.
Other factors that play an important role in the development of melasma include:
Birth control pills.
Inflammation.
Burns.
Acne.
Sun exposure.
Genetic predisposition.
Melasma can be treated using high-pulse laser technology, often within a relatively short period and with generally very good cosmetic results.
Laser treatment for melasma is performed during the winter months. Patients with very dark skin may undergo a patch test, in which the laser is applied to a small area of skin first, to assess the skin’s response and help achieve a satisfactory cosmetic outcome.
